Minoan civilization and the importance of its location-  The importance of the Minoans location was that they had contact with Egypt and Mesopotamia, which they got ideas and technology that they used in their own culture. 

 

 *Explain how Sparta's location was important-The Spartans location was important because they were isolated from other Greeks. They looked down on trade and wealth didn’t let  their own citizens travel and had little use of new ideas for the arts.

 

 *Trojan war- location- the Trojan war took place in outside the city of troy.

 *geography of Greece created?

post Persian wars domination-  Greece had great geographic protection. Instead of being in one huge city it was spread out over a series of valleys and mountains.

 *Peloponnesian War-When Athens a Sparta fought Athens faces serious geographic disadvantage.  Sparta was located inland so it could not be attacked form the sea. The Peloponnesian War ended Athens Greatness.

 *Greek theater origins-The first Greek plays evolved out of religious festivals, especially those held in Athens to honor Dionyus god of fertility and wine.

 *Alexander's achievements and empire- Although Alexander was only 20 he had learned to be a great conquerer. Alexander invaded Persia in 331he first took Babylon the Persian capitol. HE then crossed the hindu kush mountains into northern India. *center of Hellenistic world- Alexandria

 *geographic characteristics of Greece- Greece had great geographic protection. Instead of being in one huge city it was spread out over a series of valleys and mountains.

 *oligarchy- Government in which ruling power belongs to a few people.

 *democracy-Government in which the people hold ruling power.

 *Spartan childhoods- at the age of 7 a boy started training for a life in the military. 

*Athens' golden age-the government changed to direct democracy to allow the people to make their own decisions.

 *Aristotle's meritocracy- he taught promoted reason as the guiding force for learning.

 *Greek values- greek values were to obey the gods and to go into the military.

Augustus-Helped Rome recover from the long period of civil war. At the same time he laid the foundation for a stable government. He created an efficient well trained civil service chard with enforcing laws.

 *Julius Caesar- First he was a great commander and won many wars. He forced the roman senate to make him dictator. Eventhough he kept the senate and other features of the erpublic he was in fact the absolute ruler of rome.

 *Hannibal- a great general for Carthage. Embarked on one of the greatest military expeditions in history, He hated the Greeks and took a vow to hate them til the day he died.

 *Jesus- the person whome the chirstian religion is based on. THE BEST GUY EVER.

 *Paul-never saw Jesus. Paul converted to Christianity through a dream when Jesus appeared to him in a dream. Paul went on to convert thousands to Christianity.

 *Odoacer- a Germanic leader outsted the emperor in rome.

 *Ptolemy- a astronomer-mathmetiician that propped a theory that the earth was the center of the universe an idea that was accepted in the western world for nearly 1500 years.

 *Virgil- a Greek poet who wrote the epic poem the aeneid. He hoped that because he wrote the aeneid it would arouse patriotism and help unite rome after years of civil war.

 *martyr- a person who suffer or die for their beliefs.

 *mercenary- a soldier serving in a foreign army for pay.

 *messiah-savior sent by god.

 *patrician-member of the landholding upper class in ancient Rome.

 *plebian-Member of the lower class in ancient rome, including farmers, merchants, artisans, and traders.

 *aqueduct- in ancient Rome, bridge like stone structure that carried water from the hills to the cities.

 *heresy- Religious belief that is contrary to the official teachings of a church.

  *legion- basic unit of the ancient roman army made up of about 5000 soldiers.

*republic- republic of government in which officials are chosen by the people/

  *sect-small religious group
